PRICE INCREASE 2021
The market has gone completely off the rails...
If someone had predicted the demand and prices of steel for 2021 last year, we would have called them crazy. The price index shows increases across all steel products and this has never happened this quickly in the last 10 years. The demand, CO2 and energy surcharges are the biggest contributing factors to these increase, and we do not see this changing in 2022.
The demand for steel products is extremely high and as a result the mills are operating at capacity levels which has delayed the delivery of materials and left gaps in our range. We are in constant communication with the mills and placing high priority on this issue. In some cases, we are able to order material but are not given an end price because of the constant changing cost of the input metal. Suppliers have also broken contractual prices and now all contracts concerning pricing are variable and subject to change at any time.
We all are and need to deal with these challenges together and we thank you and appreciate your understanding.
wire & tube 2022
The next Wire & Tube trade fair will take place in Düsseldorf from May 9 – May 13, 2022 and Schierle is excited to be exhibiting here once again. We would be pleased to welcome you at our stand and also invite you to visit our headquarters in Neuss. We will start planning visits in the first quarter of 2022.
Outlook 2022
To be honest, we have not been particularly successful in making forecasts in recent years. We had our predictions but these were nowhere near the extent that they occurred, and as such this makes it very difficult to predict what will happen in 2022.
Suppliers of piston rods are currently increasing their prices for the first quarter of 2022 which are significant. Last year the initial price of the input material caused the increase, and for 2022 the CO2 and energy costs are the reason. Currently for 2022 the estimated surcharges for the CO2 and energy cost are per tonne in the three-digit range.
Suppliers of seamless steel tubes are also using the same CO2 and energy cost surcharges to announce further price increases. Shortages of seamless steel tubes are also expected because of capacity levels at the mills.
The prices for hot-rolled wide strip as the basis for welded tubes are showing price decreases but because of the CO2 and energy cost surcharges the mills do not expect to see any decrease in prices. Mills for welded tubes are also operating at capacity levels.
The shortage of chips and semiconductors on the world market is also a factor. This shortage effects the automotive industry and as a result, they are cutting back on production levels, which means the scrap metal needed for steel production is no longer available in quantities like before. Companies are not able to complete their orders, and are forced to work short time, even though their order books are strong.
Other factors also contributing to the price increases are the cost of wood which is affecting our packaging prices, shipping rates increasing fivefold, and the limited availability of Asian products which on arrival are now also at a price premium.
We hope that the estimated price surcharges and increases will remain stable for deliveries in the first quarter of 2022.
Corona Time
This pandemic has effected us all, and here at Schierle it has been no different with us having to introduce new company policies: Social distancing, Home office when possible, No customer visits, Face mask obligation, Twice a week corona testing, No visitors at Schierle, Increased hygiene, Offer to vaccinate our employees ...
Unfortunately, even with our precautions Schierle has been affected and as a result, there were temporary staff shortages. One of our staff members is still suffering with the side effects of Corona and of course we wish he will overcome these soon.
The Corona pandemic is not over yet and with the current situation we remain cautious and are adjusting our policies to keep our employees safe and healthy.
Every crisis also has a positive, we used this time to implement various projects.
